Gr 1-2-This brief presentation on sharks in general and then eight types of sharks is noteworthy for its connection to the authors' programming on PBS. Familiarity with the Wild Kratts shows and the popularity of the subject may bring increased attention to this title, which will function more as a read-aloud than as a beginning reader; some of the text could be read with first graders, but they might lose focus when they encounter text such as, "Ampullae of Lorenzini detect electric fields of prey." However, internal definitions in this text are superlative. "Shark skin is covered with denticles. That's why shark skin can cut you if you try to grab it. However, when a shark swims, the denticles are flat and smooth. Water moves over them easily." Illustrations help clarify vocabulary as well; however, they are clear but not very exciting. Despite the problem with textual complexity, there is value here in the insights on sharks, giving parents and caregivers an opportunity to shine more light on the subject. VERDICT Either pair this title with the PBS Wild Kratts videos or skip it.-Nancy Call
