Cormac, the Kitty Norville series' most popular supporting character, stars in his first solo adventure.
Carrie Vaughn's Low Midnight spins out of the series on the wave of popularity surrounding Kitty's most popular supporting character, Cormac Bennett, a two-minded assassin of the paranormal who specializes in killing lycanthropes. In his first solo adventure, Cormac, struggling with a foreign consciousness trapped inside him, investigates a century-old crime in a Colorado mining town which could be the key to translating a mysterious coded diary...a tome with secrets that could shatter Kitty's world and all who inhabit it.
With a framing sequence that features Kitty Norville herself, Low Midnight not only pushes the Kitty saga forward, but also illuminates Cormac's past and lays the groundwork for Kitty's future.

Vaughn’s rousing 13th Kitty Norville urban fantasy (following Kitty in the Underworld) is the first solo outing for fan favorite Cormac Bennett. On parole following a manslaughter conviction, Cormac is making a new life for himself as a supernatural detective in present-day Denver. Hunting werewolves worked for his father, but Cormac has learned that werewolves can be good as well as bad, as can vampires and other supernatural creatures. Amelia, a Victorian magician living in his head, serves as a 24/7 magical reference library, and he has plenty of investigative skills of his own. When Kitty asks him to decipher the text of the Book of Shadows, Cormac tackles it head-on, only to find that nothing in his life is simple or easy—especially when it comes to the supernatural. Vaughn keeps the twists and turns coming in this fast-paced, delightful paranormal mystery. Agent: Ashley Grayson, Ashley Grayson Literary Agency.

Fans of Vaughn's Kitty Norville series, including Kitty Rocks the House (2013), will be thrilled to see Cormac Bennett and Amelia Parker featured in their own adventure as they share a body. Ex-con Cormac, a cousin of Kitty's husband, Ben, was an assassin/bounty hunter who specialized in werewolves. His body hosts Amelia, a disembodied Victorian magic worker who was executed more than a century ago but whose spirit was too strong to die. When trying to find a key to translating a book of magic, they are tasked with solving a murder. Their investigation puts Cormac back in contact with the unsavory militia types he grew up with. Cormac's toughness, knowledge of the Colorado back country, and understanding of the people they are up against, along with Amelia's logic and knowledge of magic, are barely enough to keep them alive while they try to figure out an ancient vampire's long game. The Colorado setting is vivid, and, in a genre that has grown a little tired, Cormac and Amelia are an invigorating breath of fresh air.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2014, American Library Association.)
