Tessa's had a hard life, filled with abuse from her family, her boyfriends, and her husbands. When she meets Jace, he seems too good to be true. He literally appears out of nowhere to rescue her from a horrific situation; he is kind and upwardly mobile, and he seems to truly want to take care of Tessa, despite not knowing a thing about her. (And there's a lot to know.) They wed after mere weeks, and Tessa appears to be finally settling down in to a ""real"" life. Then Jace comes home late from work one night and discovers the window broken, blood on the floor, and no sign of Tessa. The police are immediately suspicious of Jace; why doesn't he know anything about Tessa's past? What's her real name? Why does her social security number not match her state ID? As evidence mounts, it's clear that Tessa is either dead or in grave danger, but who is responsible? Hendricks' debut will, of course, remind readers of Gone Girl, but it's no copycat.
